King Dub | Cuilén mac Illuilb |
The Battle of Dorsum Crup was fought in 965 at Duncrub, Scotland, between rebels under Cuilén mac Illuilb and the government army led by King Dub. It was a victory for Dub's men.
Background
Dub became king in 962 after Indulf was struck in the head with a dart during the Battle of Bauds. Cuilén, who was the heir to the throne, and Dub's cousin, wanted to usurp him. He raised an army to overthrow Dub.
Battle
The two forces met at Duncrub in 965, and a battle ensued. During which, Duncan, the abbot of Dunkeld, and Dubdon of Atholl were slain. It was a victory for Dub. Dub was eventually killed by robbers who may or may not have beem supporters of Cuilén in 967.
Location
Dorsum Crup is Latin for "Ridge of Crup". The battle is fought in Duncrub, but the only potential "ridge" is a higher ground which overlooks the farmhouse of Duncrub Mains and the Duncrub Burn. The higher ground reaches 64 meters at full height.
