Joe O'Hara (Born August 8 1968) is an Irish academic, and is currently Professor of Education at Dublin City University. O'Hara's academic research focuses on evaluation with a particular interest in the role of culture and cultural context in how we discuss quality in education. He is Co-Director of the Centre of Evaluation, Quality and Inspection (EQI) at DCU and an Affiliate Staff member at the Centre for Culturally Responsive Evaluation and Assessment at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
O'Hara has held a variety of positions throughout his academic career. After completing a Bachelor of Religious Science and History at Mater Dei Institute of Education in 1990 he moved to Harare, Zimbabwe where he was appointed Director of Teacher Education and at the Wadzanai Training Centers. After spending 4 years in this position, O'Hara moved back to Ireland to begin postgraduate studies at DCU. He with an MSc in Education and Training Management in 1997.
In the course of his studies at DCU he was , he was hired as a junior lecturer in Education in Dublin City University, and he has worked in the School of Education Studies / DCU Institute of Education since 1996.
In 2001, he began working towards his PhD in Educational Evaluation and completed his studies in 2007. .
O'Hara was appointed as Professor of Education in 2013, and he continues to hold this position.
In addition to his work in DCU O'Hara has had a number of representative roles. He was appointed to the Board of APSO –The Association of Personal Services Overseas (now Irish Aid) by the Minister for Foreign Affairs in 2001. In 2012 he was appointed by the Minister of Education to the Teaching Council of Ireland and represented the 3rd Level sector on the Council until 2016.
O'Hara was President of the Educational Studies Association of Ireland from 2010-2012 and represented Ireland on the Council of the European Educational Research Association from 2018 – 2023.
O'Hara is currently the President-Elect of the World Education Research Association (WERA) and President of the European Alliance for Social Science and Humanities
O'Hara grew up in Coolock, County Dublin and currently lives in Glasnevin, County Dublin. He is alumni of St. Joseph's CBS Secondary School.
