Simonsberg Men's Residence (also Simonsberg) is a male student housing facility at Stellenbosch University, located on Merriman Avenue in Stellenbosch, South Africa.
History
Simonsberg Men's Residence was established in 1956 to accommodate the growing number of male students at Stellenbosch University. The residence adopted the motto Noblesse Oblige.
In 1966, Robert F. Kennedy visited Simonsberg after his "Day of Affirmation" address, where spoke, facilitated by the Primarius at the time.
Traditions and Culture
The has an orientation programme designed to familiarize first-year students with its ethos, values, and traditions. Each year, approximately 100 first-year students are admitted, typically sharing rooms to foster camaraderie. During the initial weeks, newcomers participate in activities that build relationships and integrate them into residence life. Senior students serve as mentors, assisting first-years in adjusting to university life.
A significant event in the residence's calendar is the annual "Vensters" charity event, where Simonsberg partners with another residence to engage in community service and cultural exchange. Another highlight is the Simonsberg Metropolitan, commonly known as the Met, which is the oldest residence tradition in Stellenbosch and one of the largest student-organized events in the Southern Hemisphere.
