El Qanayat (Arabic: قسم القنايات) is a city in the Sharqia Governorate of Egypt, located in the northeastern Nile Delta. It serves as a northern suburb of Zagazig.
Geography
El Qanayat is situated in the fertile Nile Delta, surrounded by agricultural land irrigated by the Damietta branch of the Nile. The city is bordered by Zagazig to the northeast. Its terrain is flat, typical of the delta region, with elevations averaging 10–15 meters above sea level.
Climate
El Qanayat has a hot desert climate (Köppen climate classification BWh), characterized by hot, dry summers and mild winters.
Demographics
As of 2023, El Qanayat had an estimated population of 75,000 residents. The town grew out of an agricultural village. The city has seen gradual urbanization, with small-scale industries and services emerging alongside traditional farming.
