The Hughes Fire was a wildfire that burned in Los Angeles County in Southern California. The fire burned over 10,000 acres (4,000 hectares). The fire began near Lake Hughes Road near Castaic Lake and its cause is under investigation. It prompted evacuation orders in the region around Castaic Lake.

Due to the high Santa Ana winds in the area, the fire exploded to 5,000 acres just an hour after it started, and ballooned to 10,176 acres by the end of the day.

Progression

On January 22, 2025, CalFire released their first status report at 10:54 AM, estimating around 50 acres already actively burning. Less than an hour later at 11:43 AM, the size of the fire had increased by one order of magnitude to 500 acres. The fire would continue its exponential spread, and at 1:03 PM cover around 5,054 acres.

By the morning of January 23 at 8:35 AM, overnight firefighting effort using ground and air support achieved 14% containment, preventing the spread to neighboring Elderberry canyon. At this point, the fire has burned 10,176 acres. Roughly twelve hours later at 8:12 PM, the fire became 24% contained, and status report indicate a successful air and group attack by firefighters. Firefighting efforts continued over the next two days, with infrequent status updates from CalFire.

On January 26, 8:43 PM CalFire announced 92% containment at 10,396 acres burned.
