QXZ Ads
Sorry to bother you...I notice there are a couple other queries about this on your talk page already; just a quick question or two: 1) Are you (still) involved with the rotating ad banner? and 2) If I designed an ad for the Graphic Lab, would it be possible to have it inserted into the queue? Thanks. -YK Times 22:10, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

- The template is not protected, so you could add your own if you want. →AzaToth 23:04, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

sprotect-banneduser
Alright, but we still need a template that can add Category:Semi-protected from banned users. Also, edits by banned users aren't necessarily vandalism, and the template also survived TfD in the past. Khoikhoi 00:50, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
- Ok, I think I understand, I though all activities by banned users where to see as vandalism. I'll make a new template then. →AzaToth 00:57, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
- Sure, great! Thanks, Khoikhoi 01:12, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
{{pp-usertalk}}
... has an extra bracket in the line:
{{vandal-m|<includeonly>{{{user|{{PAGENAME}}}}}}</includeonly><noinclude>Example</noinclude>}}
after PAGENAME; there should be five, there actually are six.
This shows up in actual use, for instance on User talk:JB196.
And actually it would be even simpler to NOT EMBED the "user" template and the rest of the complexity:
{{vandal-m|{{BASEPAGENAME}}}}
... all by itself, does all you want. Try that! -- Ben TALK/HIST 05:36, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
{{vandal-m|{{#ifeq:{{NAMESPACEE}}|User_talk|{{BASEPAGENAME}}|Example}}}}
works too: username if posted on the user's talkpage, "Example" if posted anywhere else. -- Ben TALK/HIST 07:19, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
- I'll fix that, but the user parameter should be left, as there could be reason to point to another user than the actual user. →AzaToth 12:10, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
E104421/Tajik
Hello, thanks for dealing with E and Tajik. I didn't know about that "mediation" page. Maybe it's worth a try; you may have seen I was beginning to discuss some such solution with E myself. The trouble with these two guys is that they keep getting into these conflicts time and again on many different articles. The conflicts are all related (basically, it's about defining medieval central Asian ethnicities in terms of cultural influence and continuity with present-day Turkic and Iranian nationalities) - but they keep finding new places where to quarrel over those issues. So, what we need is probably a long-term solution, not just a mediation of a single conflict. Something like a mediator-cum-mentor-cum-arbitrator. A place where they are required to go and discuss in every instance they have a disagreement (under observance of 0RR), under the eyes of a mediator. And I think we might also need something that's rather uncommon in Wiki dispute resolution otherwise: a content tie-breaking mechanism, in case they simply can't agree. We need the mediator to have the power to actually impose an outcome to the debate, i.e. to tell either or both of them to stop and leave an issue alone. Fut.Perf. ☼ 14:51, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
- It's a totally new things, and is in trial period, and I thought we could give it a try, the users seems to be good editors, they just cant stop disagreeing with each other. →AzaToth 15:01, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

You might want to consult with the other involved admin.
Slightly before you protected the Essjay controversy page, your fellow admin User:WikiLeon ruled that since the dispute had nothing to do with the subject of the page, it was simply trolling and disruption to even bring it up and that doing so again would result in a block for disrupting the article (which is otherwise stable).
Your two opinions are currently at odds with each other, to say the least. So you might want to consult with him about whether protection will be helpful or merely engender more disruption by forcing further discussion of the unrelated Wikipedia foundership dispute. --tjstrf talk 22:37, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

E104421 and Tajik
You've now reversed for of my blocks in the last few days, the same two users, twice each, and have not communicated to me a single time, or asked the input of any other admin, or attempted to find consensus on another noticeboard. I find this extremely disrespectful and unbecoming of an administrator. None of these nblocks were emergencies, in which you could not have first attempted discussion, and it appears to me that you acted without full knowledge of the situation. After repeated blocks for the exact same behavior for a period of months, after repeating the behavior after you unblocked them the first time, it is not a reasonable expectation to think they will suddenly become constructive editors. At least, if it is your expectation, it is not one that should be acted on unilaterally when another administrator has already blocked them for the offense. Dmcdevit·t 23:25, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
- I unblocked them so they could begin mediation, I warned then thay they are not to do any other edits during the time. I'm sorry if I didn't notified you about it, I'll remember that next time. →AzaToth 23:36, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
- And the second time? When they each ignored your warning to stay away from each other, and were reblocked, what purpose do you think unblocking them again with no discussion served? To warn them that you might warn them again? Dmcdevit·t 01:44, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
- In any case, I indicated to you why I thought mediation (much less involuntary mediation?) wouldn't work, and your response was "I unblcked them so they could begin mediation" without addressing the substance of my remark. I'm taking the two to arbitration, since I think that's the only way to solve the problem, not mediation, and they are unblocked now. See Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration#E104421 and Tajik. Dmcdevit·t 04:39, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

Welcome links for TWINKLE (if you have time)
If you're not too busy, could I suggest another tab on user talk page editing for TWINKLE? It would be very useful to have a tab that just inserted, like with the warning templates, {{welcomeh}}. That template is exactly the same as {{welcomeg}} but with a heading - and it does need the heading. In which case, I would recommend the tab to insert exactly this:
== '''Welcome''' to Wikipedia, {{subst:BASEPAGENAME}}! ==
{{subst:welcomeg}}
As the templates {{welcomeh}} and {{welcomeg}} already include a signature, the four tildes at the end is excluded. Thanks for reading, and I hope to see this implemented some day! —Vanderdecken∴ ∫ξφ 14:56, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

Protection at Essjay controversy
I'm afraid that a full protection of this version is only going to exacerbate the situation. If you look over the Essjay controversy (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) logs and talk page, you'll see that the current round of dispute was engendered by two tendentious editors -- QuackGuru (talk · contribs) and Bramlet Abercrombie (talk · contribs)-- who have repeatedly reinserted claims deprecating Jimmy Wales's founding role in Wikipedia, and campaigning for Sanger's "co-founder" status in unrelated articles. Protecting this article is not the way to reach consensus on this issue-- it was already arrived at on the article's talk page. Block individual editors if they breach 3RR, but don't penalise those who have been working in good faith on the article prior to the Bramlet's sudden arrival to promote his particular POV.--LeflymanTalk 23:14, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

Giving a block reason with the UsernameBlocked template
As the header of WP:RFCN says,
Admins who impose username blocks, please detail the specific reason with {{UsernameBlocked|reason for block}} or {{unb|reason for block}} (not just "Violates WP:U", please).
What isn't documented at {{usernameblock}}, and should be (but I can't edit it to do so, it's protected), is that the template takes an optional parameter. {{usernameblock|reason for block}}, or even {{unb|reason for block}}, will replace the rest of the sentence following "blocked indefinitely because", up to the parenthetical "(see our blocking and username policies for more information)", with your own specific reason for the block.
That is, the boilerplate text -- ..."it may be rude or inflammatory, unnecessarily long/confusing, too similar to an existing user, contains the name of an organization or website, or is otherwise inappropriate"... -- goes away and is replaced by your own text.
If you enter: {{unb|"Charles Prince of Wales" too closely resembles the existing username "The Outlaw Josey Wales"}}
you get:
- Your username has been blocked indefinitely because "Charles Prince of Wales" too closely resembles the existing username "The Outlaw Josey Wales" (see our blocking and username policies for more information).
- (and the rest of the template stays the same)
If the username was blocked following a discussion at Wikipedia:Requests for comment/User names, you may wish to link to the archive of that discussion, for instance:
- {{unb|1="1337 H4XZ0R" falls under [[WP:USERNAME#Trouble|"usernames that... give the impression that you intend to cause trouble here, such as by alluding to hacking"]], and was disallowed by [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=WP:RFCN&oldid=119514027#1337_H4XZ0R_.28talk_.E2.80.A2_contribs.29 a discussion at WP:RFCN]}}
Notice in the above that, since the URL includes equal signs, you need to declare the parameter explicitly with "1=". -- Ben TALK/HIST 20:24, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

Hey Azatoth! Question about a template
You recently changed Template:P-protected to a redirect - was the original template preserved somewhere? TWINKLEwarn and signatures
Hi. It seems like the standard for UW templates has slightly changed and the signatures that place themselves inside the box are the default behavior now (at least for all block templates - and I use these almost exclusively). This leads to edits like this if one doesn't remember to remove the ~~~~ TwinkleWarn adds. I have skimmed through the code and it seems the tildes are hardcoded. Would it be possible to make it an option or make the script recognize which templates use the embeded templates and which don't? Cheers, Миша13 19:10, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi, AzaToth, I love what you did with the New protection templates they look Great good work, and that made me think you would be a good person to ask my question to because you have Wiki skills and you may be able to help me out with my question/Idea about the little Image Thumbnail for FA and GA class article's. So I am hopeing you can Help me with my Idea. FA class has a barnstar and a GA class has a round stamp, but nothing for the "A" class article. I thought that there could be a little Thumbnail for class A article's like the others, this may help motivate some people to work harder to get there article form GA up closer to FA class, because I know for many people the Jump from GA to FA class is a big one that requires a lot of work and more knowledge of the subject and Wikipedia. I see so many people with the little FA and GA Thumbnail pic's, on there user page showing off how many articles they have worked on and such. they have become a little like the Barnstars people give one another, becoming a little like s bag of merit or some thing. I think Wikipedia most Valuable resource would be the people that edit it, more than just the people that edit one line of text, but the people that have passion for a subject and given the right positive reinforcement will become vary productive Wikipedians. So what I would like is to have a "Talk" about this with other Wikipeadia members who may have ideas or experence with some thing like this, Do you think you could help me out? TWINKLE watchlisting
Hi, I just started using TWINKLE a couple of days ago and it's working pretty nicely. I would like to ask though if there is any way to turn off the function that automatically adds to my watchlist articles I've reverted for vandalism. I do my part to rid WP of vandalism when I can, but I also want to keep my watchlist a manageable size, limited to the articles that I heavily edit and not every page on Recentchanges I happen to come across. Thanks for a great script. Wl219 02:44, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

TW and Signatures
Currently, when using any of TW's features that sign the post, it inserts ~~~~. My signature currently has the timestamp already in it, and I normally sign my posts with just three tildes. I was wondering if you could kindly add one more config variable that would set the singage that TW uses. For now I've just copied and modified the files that include the four tildes into my userspace, but that would have me stuck in the current version, without any updates. Thanks a lot (Great tool you've built!) — MrSomeone • t | c | 22:52, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
- You should't use such a signature, as it will break bots. →AzaToth 23:50, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
- Bots serve people, not the other way around. Anyway, which bots? If you mean HagermanBot, if I recall correctly that just looks for something with a '(UTC)' at the end, so it should work fine – Gurch 11:45, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

How does one run this bot for WP:ACID messages? It wasn't on the instructions on the maintenence page when I switched the WP:ACID article and it would save time if I have to switch the articles again (where'd the usual people go?). — Pious7TalkContribs 10:48, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

More templates
Since you and Gurch (well, technically Qxz) created the marvelous ads which I can't display them on my userpage because there is not enough room. Anyway, to the point, in a randomizing manner similar to the way the ads are programmed, I've created a template that randomly chooses from 30 quotes ({{Randomquote}}). Tell me if you like it (you seem to never respond to my messages, but please respond to this one). ~ Steptrip 01:20, 17 April 2007 (UTC)
- Looks rather ok, but what do you want with {{#ifeq:{{NAMESPACE}}|Main|0%|90%}}? :) →AzaToth 10:18, 17 April 2007 (UTC)
- It's just so that just in case the template gets transcluded into the mainspace, it won't show anything (or at least show it in a very small font). What do you think about starting a template to which any and all Wikipedians can add a quote (since {{Randomquote}} is for non-wikipedian quotes)? ~ Steptrip 21:42, 17 April 2007 (UTC)
- I think the Motto of the Day project beat you to it: {{motd}}. Turns out Wikipedians aren't actually that good at thinking up quotes – Gurch 11:35, 18 April 2007 (UTC)
- True, even though I am a contributor to that project, I am compelled to say, "As Thoreau once said, morons love to quote philosophers." By the way, could either of you (meaning Gurch or AzaToth) make an ad for {{Randomquote}}? ~ Magnus animum (aka Steptrip) 00:49, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

Template help
I am creating a collaboration of the month template for WikiProject Lutheranism, and I could use a little help. I have based it -- {{Lutheran COTM}} -- on the Article improvement drive template, which I see in the history you have done some work on. My problem is that when I switch out {{IDRIVEtopic article}} with {{Lutheran collaboration article}}, the article height greatly increases. I would like to keep the banner slim, like the {{IDRIVEtopic}}, but I'm not experienced enought with templates to fix this little glitch. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. -- Pastordavid 22:46, 18 April 2007 (UTC)
- Never mind -- will wonders never cease -- I fixed it myself. Thanks anyway. SOrry to distract you with unnecessary messages. -- Pastordavid 22:49, 18 April 2007 (UTC)
Typo in Twinkle, nothing major
On your twinklediff.js script, previous is missing a u on this line (near the end):
Status.error( [ 'No previos revision found, or ', user , ' is only contributor ' ] );
It's nothing major or anything, I just thought you'd like to know. --RazorICE 09:12, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
Re:Headline levels
Found the solution. On this script, User:AzaToth/twinklewarn.js, I found some coding marked.
var headerRe = new RegExp( "^===\\s*" + date.getUTCMonthName() + "\\s+" + date.getUTCFullYear() + "\\s*===", 'm' ); var textbox = document.getElementById( 'wpTextbox1' );
And
if ( textbox.value.length > 0 ) { textbox.value += '\n'; } if( !headerRe.exec( textbox.value ) ) { header += "=== " + date.getUTCMonthName() + " " + date.getUTCFullYear() + " ===\n"; }
I think that a second level headline can be generated by removing an equal sign. --KzTalk• Contribs 10:33, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
- Also, can you please change User:AzaToth/twinklediff.js, as there seems to be a typo mistake for reecent->recent. Cheers. --KzTalk• Contribs 10:38, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
- The reason for three equal signs, is that it was the recomendation from WP:UW →AzaToth 12:36, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
- What might be nice would be to modify the headerRe regex so it didn't add a new header if one existed at a different level, too - what I've seen happen is that some tools add == April 2007 ==, then when you come along with Twinkle and it wants to add === April 2007 ===. At least detecting the higher-level header and not adding a new one when it exists, as well as when the third level header exists, would be a nice feature addition. And it should be as simple as adding question marks after the third "=" at each end of the regex. —Krellis (Talk) 14:59, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

WP:TWINKLE Question
Hi, I am new to using TWINKLE and need a bit of help. When I am patrolling recent changes, I click on 'diff' of an article that needs reverting. I then click what button to revert it back to it's previous revision? I'm a bit confused. Extranet (Talk | Contribs) 21:00, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
- to revert to a specific revision, use the "restore this version" tha t is in brow text over the first column. →AzaToth 21:24, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, you see, that is what is going wrong. I am getting the following error when I try to revert:
Querying revision.....
Grabbing edit form....................
Updating the textbox...
couldn't grab element "editform", aborting, this could indicate failed respons from the server
Could you possibly help? Extranet (Talk | Contribs) 21:47, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
- It could be that you are using Northon Internet Security or ZoneAlarm. →AzaToth 22:24, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

Re: Twinkle on IE
Hi, AzaToth. I need to seek assistance with Twinkle. Someone on IRC, Smokizzy, is looking at Twinkle for Anti Vandal Work, but only uses IE. Do you have any plans to code Twinkle to work on IE, since this user does not get on with Firefox & the like. Thanks. Thor Malmjursson 16:34, 22 April 2007 (UTC)
Twinkle
Hey AzaToth, I recently started using Twinkle for RC patrol. It's amazing, but recently it's begun to freeze in the process of reverting at the "edit summary" stage. It makes it this far:
Querying revisions......
Evaluating revisions to see if 69.136.195.133 is the last contributor...
Finding last good revision... revision 124419883 that was made 1 revisions ago by Psiphiorg
Getting content for revision 124419883.....
Grabbing edit form.....................
Updating the textbox...
Updating the summary...
and then stops dead. Any ideas? Thanks. GoodnightmushTalk 16:53, 22 April 2007 (UTC)
importScript
Hi, I've been trying to use WP:POP on the french wikipedia (would be the same for wiktionary and such I expect).
I looked at including a template from another wiki, but that wasn't the point.
I think I just need something like:
importScript(':en:User:Lupin/popups.js');
to work on the french wiki.
And since, according to firebug and MediaWiki:Common.js, you are the maintainer of this piece of javascript, I'd like to know if/how this can be done?

Stub templates
We would like stub templates to have the following behaviour:
- The fist one generates a leading line break.
- Subsequent ones don't.
It seems to me that we should be (might be) able to put some code at the end of the tmeplate which will supress leading blank lines from the next template, but do no harm otherwise. Any ideas? Rich Farmbrough, 12:12 23 April 2007 (GMT).
- Rather impossible as a template cannot recall any previous invocation. →AzaToth 13:12, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

Twinkle username reporting
Hey there - not sure if you're aware of this but a number of people are discussing the username reporting function of Twinkle. The basic outline of arguments seems to be that it is causing an excessive number of username reports being reported to AIV with a description "this username is a clear violation of policy" which isn't sufficient explanation for the blocking admins. Recently the header at AIV has been changed to that effect. There are also discussions about this feature of Twinkle at WT:AIV, WT:RFCN and also at the MfD for RFCN. You've probably been alerted to / noticed these discussions already but I thought I'd point it out just in case. Regards. Will (aka Wimt) 10:29, 29 April 2007 (UTC)
- I can see what I can do. When I first made the "unsername to AIV" function, I made it for my own, but as more people was using it, I changed the reason and introduced the confirm box. I could make a more advanced feature, but would need to know exactly where different types of names should be reported, as some still should be reported to AIV in my option. →AzaToth 13:13, 29 April 2007 (UTC)
- Well yes - at the moment there doesn't seem to be a great consensus about where is the best place to report username violations. I hope that this latest MfD might conclude as to whether usernames should still be either reported to AIV or RFCN as they are at the moment, or whether a new page will be created for this purpose. So at the moment it's probably a case of waiting and seeing what happens. Just thought I would point out where people were discussion Twinkle though, in case you wanted to give any input. Regards. Colspan
What are the functions of "colspan" and "rowspan" when used in a template? ~ Magnus animum ∵ ∫ φ γ 15:21, 28 April 2007 (UTC)
- Colspan/rowspan has to do with html tables. →AzaToth 20:25, 28 April 2007 (UTC)
- What kinds of formatting changes do they make (e.g. colspan - more columns / rowspan - more rows)? ~ Magnus animum ∵ ∫ φ γ 01:23, 29 April 2007 (UTC)
They defines per cell how many columns/rows the certain cell should span, for example:
colspan="2" | rowspan="2" | |
normal | normal |

Twinkle block length
I"m writing to ask if you have considered setting the default block length in Twinkle to 1 month rather than indefinite. For almost every situation 1 month is enough, and since most people forget about the pages they have protected it helps if the protections expire on their own.
