Administrators' newsletter – September 2024
News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2024).
- Following an RfC, there is a new criterion for speedy deletion: C4, which
applies to unused maintenance categories, such as empty dated maintenance categories for dates in the past
. - A request for comment is open to discuss whether Notability (species) should be adopted as a subject-specific notability guideline.
- Following a motion, remedies 5.1 and 5.2 of World War II and the history of Jews in Poland (the topic and interaction bans on My very best wishes, respectively) were repealed.
- Remedy 3C of the German war effort case ("Cinderella157 German history topic ban") was suspended for a period of six months.
- The arbitration case Historical Elections is currently open. Proposed decision is expected by 3 September 2024 for this case.
- Editors can now enter into good article review circles, an alternative for informal quid pro quo arrangements, to have a GAN reviewed in return for reviewing a different editor's nomination.
- A New Pages Patrol backlog drive is happening in September 2024 to reduce the number of unreviewed articles and redirects in the new pages feed. Currently, there is a backlog of over 13,900 articles and 26,200 redirects awaiting review. Sign up here to participate!

Question from Ernstik 5 (12:08, 8 September 2024)
Hello, I am a musical artist and I want to create an article about myself. Is it possible? Thanks! --Ernstik 5 (talk) 12:08, 8 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Ernstik 5 While its certainly not impossible, its very difficult. Its hard to write about yourself in a manner that is neutral, and not an advertisement, even for the best writers. Further, you might not qualify for an article. We only write about notable subjects, which usually requires someone to have received significant media coverage. Usually, if you're notable, someone else will write an article about you in time. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n!⚓ 02:20, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
Question from Freecranes on Supranet (01:43, 11 September 2024)
is the user page just a list of links? I'm in text editor trying to create user page for Freecranes...
i was distracted and attempting my first edit...
what am i doing? thanks beth --Freecranes (talk) 01:43, 11 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Freecranes a user page can be whatever you want it to be! Within reason of course; it still has to relate to your function of being a Wikipedia editor. But folks put all sorts of different things on their pages. Mine has a mix of pictures, humourous quotes, practical tools, and more. Beyond that I guess I'm not exactly sure what you're asking? Can you help me narrow down your question? CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n!⚓ 06:55, 11 September 2024 (UTC)
Question from Wikieduuser (03:03, 10 September 2024)
Hi how do I create pages? --Wikieduuser (talk) 03:03, 10 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Wikieduuser It seems you figured out how to submit articles to the AFC queue, which is the first step. Now the issue you face though is that the subject is likely not notable, i.e. not well known enough to qualify for an article. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n!⚓ 20:06, 10 September 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you! I've made edits to include many more national-level media appearances and TV appearances. Is this good now Captain? Wikieduuser (talk) 01:09, 11 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Wikieduuser Well the first issue is I don't think the Weixin citations will be appropriate. Social media is not generally allowed as a source except for very specific circumstances. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n!⚓ 06:52, 11 September 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for your reply. I will see how to find the same articles from elsewhere. Thank you. Wikieduuser (talk) 06:55, 11 September 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you again for the reply. I have removed Wechat sources, and replaced them with official account of Shanghai Education Television Station's Program, and Sohu News. Does the Draft pass review now? Wikieduuser (talk) 13:21, 11 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Wikieduuser I'm not going to review it for you; it'll get reviewed in the review queue in the normal course of events. I suspect you're going to have a hard time getting it approved though, because its hard to point to what this guy is actually...important for? Like, we aren't writing about many 21 year olds; they have to be pretty exceptional to warrant inclusion. He's a promising young man, but we don't write about folks just because they might be noteworthy at some point. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n!⚓ 04:34, 12 September 2024 (UTC)

Question from DZAugustus (17:03, 22 September 2024)
Is it possible to successfully combat, ie change, propaganda infos that are posted by dictatorship regimes? [Example Algerie] - Right at the beginning I ran into this definition "... a country in the "Maghreb region of north Africa." If you lookup WP regions, such region is not defined. The designation is a relative localisation ie in relation to the Middle-East (Asia Minor). Middle-Easteners a free to inform themselves as they wish, in their language(here Maghreb:West to Arabic speaking peoples), when location is a matter of geo-location ! Example: Can one locate India or Autralia or the USA as South, Est, West of UK? --DZAugustus (talk) 17:03, 22 September 2024 (UTC)
- @DZAugustus We describe the subjects of articles according to how reliable sources define them. If you're looking for more information on the Maghreb, just follow that blue link. Otherwise, I guess I'm not quite sure what your concern is? CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n!⚓ 23:31, 22 September 2024 (UTC)

Hello, I just want to add some missing info and a band I was in BC. How do I go about submitted info? Thanks, Brian --Bkonechny (talk) 05:42, 18 October 2024 (UTC)

- @Bkonechny so the band doesn't currently have an article? If not, it might be difficult to get them a page unless it received more than just passing news coverage. - If you scroll down to Vancouver, you will find my band name Teaser but no info linked to it.
- It's the only band with no additional info. lol
- Also, my drummer has a little info on his site that we could link to

- Let me know what you think is the best way.
- BK 64.234.113.36 (talk) 23:08, 22 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Bkonechny your drummer's own site can't be used as a source to establish notability. We don't write about everything, only those things which have received sufficient coverage in reliable, independent sources. Can you link me three newspaper articles that talk about your band at length? It's okay if they're from the 80s. This can get tricky because you might need to use a site like Newspapers.com. Re:Arbcom/Serial Number 54129
I don’t mean to sound like I’m tatting or anything, but this user’s recent comments at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case don’t seem to be in line with the principle of “This page is for statements, not discussion.” I’ve also provided a number of diffs there showing this user has problems with incivility and hounding and is unwilling to seriously listen to anyone they disagree with. Normally I’d take this to ANI but I don’t want to stir up more dramah which is clearly what they want to happen by baiting me like this. I’m not sure if you can/want to do anything about this but as an arbitrator I thought you might be able to help. Dronebogus (talk) 16:04, 5 November 2024 (UTC)

- @Dronebogus@Serial Number 54129 Serial, it's really not a great look to get pulled to my page and to then just continue to attack Dronebogus. I understand your criticism at the Marine 69-71 page. While I've never liked Commons' status as a wank bank, and agree that some of Dronebogus's contributions there are questionable, he does have some useful NSFW images. But that's not the point. The point is to focus on the content, not the contributor. Just because an editor has made content X does not mean they are disqualified from having an opinion on Y. The deeper issue here Serial, as revealed by the various diffs listed on the ARC, is that you've been making a lot of spicy comments directed at other editors as of late. Are you doing okay? I know it's a stressful time in the world, so I want to make sure you're taking care of yourself. Curiosity only, I promise I won't use the answer to attack ArbCom anymore (this week)
What is the actual criterion for "very clear consensus"? It's not unanimity, I assume. Could you provide numbers without violating any secret stuff? Not necessarily the numbers for the Bish vote, which I can see could be considered none of my business. But just, in general, how many no votes would it take to veto a choice? I'd ask at WT:ACN, except I sort of think that discussion may have nearly run its course. But if you think this is better answered there, that's fine with me. Floquenbeam (talk) 16:48, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Floquenbeam Can you clarify the broader sentence you're referring to? I wanna make sure we're on the same page about what part of the process. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n!⚓ 17:05, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
- The one Kusma found at Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee/Conflict of interest reports#Appointments: "The Committee carefully vets all applications with feedback from the functionaries team; very clear consensus from the Committee is needed for a candidate to be presented for consideration to the Community." Floquenbeam (talk) 17:28, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
- Although it doesn't say it, i assume the same "very clear consensus" is needed at the actual final vote, too.... Floquenbeam (talk) 17:29, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Floquenbeam thank you, always good to have the citation just in case :) So the way we went about that this time was that we took a strawpoll among the Committee, to see if there were any candidates who obviously weren't going to pass the 70% threshold required at the end for ultimate appointment. We then advanced with the candidates who remained. As I elaborated at ACN, we apparently need to improve how that process works. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n!⚓ 17:51, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you. That 70% threshold is what I was probably really after, I just didn't know enough to ask the right question. Perhaps it says it somewhere and I didn't notice. Also, I know I'm probably preaching to the choir, but: I agree the process could use some work (priority #1: tell candidates who don't pass why, right off the bat, don't make them ask), but my main ... annoyance, I suppose, is a good word? ... is that whoever voted "no" was just so obviously wrong this time. It increases my concern that when they're voting on people I don't know much about, they're making similar mistakes. Floquenbeam (talk) 18:03, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Floquenbeam I think we're very much on the same page there. With regards to 70%, I don't believe that number is explicitly on-wiki, but we did establish that the COIVRT queue needed a functionary-like appointment process, and the funcs need a supermajority (70%) to be appointed. Ergo, 70% for COIVRT, because it's handling NDA material. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n!⚓ 18:07, 14 November 2024 (UTC)

Lincoln's assassination
Captain Eek, I like your addition of "dying the next day" in "Lincoln lived to see this victory but was shot by an assassin on April 14, dying the next day." But I like it because it informs readers that he died the next day, not for the reason you gave, which is "Just saying that he was shot isn't enough, we need to specify that he died. You can survive being shot." This is because the fact that he died was stated before you added "dying the next day." It was stated because the sentence says that he was "shot by an assassin." Had Lincoln survived, Booth would have been merely an attempted assassin. Please don't take this comment too seriously; I'm just having fun. Maurice Magnus (talk) 03:17, 1 December 2024 (UTC)

I tried CoPilot and couldn't locate anything other than her birthdate and marriage date. Could you find her death date and place? --Loracnedwab (talk) 04:59, 1 December 2024 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – December 2024
News and updates for administrators from the past month (November 2024).
Interface administrator changes
- Following an RFC, the policy on restoration of adminship has been updated. All former administrators may now only regain the tools following a request at the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard within 5 years of their most recent admin action. Previously this applied only to administrators deysopped for inactivity.
- Following a request for comment, a new speedy deletion criterion, T5, has been enacted. This applies to template subpages that are no longer used.
- Technical volunteers can now register for the 2025 Wikimedia Hackathon, which will take place in Istanbul, Turkey. Application for travel and accommodation scholarships is open from November 12 to December 10, 2024.
- The arbitration case Yasuke (formerly titled Backlash to diversity and inclusion) has been closed.
- An arbitration case titled Palestine-Israel articles 5 has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case will close on 14 December.

Thank you for standing for arbitrator. I am far away from it all (travel, mourning), not in the mood, so just an informal question you can answer or ignore:
- Liviu Holender chose lieder by five composers whose music was banned by the Nazis—Schreker, Zemlinsky, Mahler, Korngold and Schönberg—for a recital at the Oper Frankfurt.
What does this 2024 DYK tell you about infoboxes for classical composers in 2024? -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:19, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Gerda Arendt Hi Gerda, sorry to hear about rough times for you; I hope the sun shines again on you soon. As to your question, we've talked about infoboxes before. I still stand by my 2022 response about the infobox wars. The interesting thing I note from that DYK is that all of the articles have an infobox, except for Mahler's, but Mahler is the only FA. Of course, Mahler is a 2010 vintage FA, from an era before the ubiquity of infoboxes. What does that tell me? I guess from this small sampling, it might be evidence that infoboxes have won the war on infoboxes. Much as drugs seem to have won the war on drugs, or poverty has won the war on poverty.... - Perhaps turn your attention to the talk pages, and tell me if you believe that the topic should still be treated as "contentious". (I asked in 2018, that's right.) -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 01:24, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Gerda Arendt Thank you for the direction :) Most of the articles don't have an issue. But I do admit some surprise at seeing just how recent and voluminous the infobox argument on Mahler's page is. However, from this small sampling, I'm not sure I could say authoritatively that infoboxes remain a problem. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n!⚓ 01:36, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- You might try the strength of arguments, how is that? I wanted to keep it simple, but if you don't see enough for Mahler try Mozart. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:14, 20 November 2024 (UTC)

- November was rich in sadness and happiness for me, expressed in music. Regarding my question, I found one so far who looked into the matter and didn't stay at the surface, Simonm223. There are two composers on the Main page today, Siegfried Thiele and Aaron Copland. I find the response of my friend Jerome Kohl to a question on Copland's article talk promising. What do you think? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:58, 2 December 2024 (UTC)
- Today's story comes from a DYK about a concert that fascinated me, and you can listen! For my taste, the hook has too little music - I miss the unusual scoring and a specific dedication - but it comes instead with a name good for viewcount. I'd still like to know what you think about the Copland posts. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:53, 6 December 2024 (UTC)

- Listen today to Beethoven's 3rd cello sonata, on his birthday - it was a hook in the 2020 DYK set when his 250th birthday was remembered. Welcome to the 2025 WikiCup!
Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2025 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor, we hope the WikiCup will give you a chance to improve your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page.
For the 2025 WikiCup, we've implemented several changes to the scoring system. The highest-ranking contestants will now receive tournament points at the end of each round, and final rankings are decided by the number of tournament points each contestant has. If you're busy and can't sign up in January, don't worry: Signups are now open throughout the year. To make things fairer for latecomers, the lowest-scoring contestants will no longer be eliminated at the end of each round.
The first round will end on 26 February. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email), Epicgenius (talk · contribs · email), Frostly (talk · contribs · email), Guerillero (talk · contribs · email) and Lee Vilenski (talk · contribs · email).
