"dealing with" categories
- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: Rename all. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 13:40, 30 October 2011 (UTC)
- Propose renaming Category:Poems dealing with The Holocaust to Category:Poems about The Holocaust
- Propose renaming Category:Songs dealing with The Holocaust to Category:Songs about The Holocaust
- Propose renaming Category:Songs dealing with abortion to Category:Songs about abortion
- Propose renaming Category:Novels dealing with slavery to Category:Novels about slavery
- Nominator's rationale: These are all categories of works about difficult things, but we don't use the construction "dealing with" in any other categories. Things are either "about" something, or they're not. The first two could also be Category:Holocaust songs and Category:Holocaust poems per other categories of Category:Works about the Holocaust.-- Mike Selinker (talk) 14:23, 21 October 2011 (UTC)

- Category:Calder Cup champions (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
- Nominator's rationale: The Calder Cup is the championship of the minor league American Hockey League. In my opinion, winning a minor league championship is not a defining characteristic of biographies. TM 14:10, 21 October 2011 (UTC)
- Delete Yes, it's hard to see a minor league championship meeting WP:OC#AWARD, nor do I see AAA championships in Category:Baseball award winners. Surprising that this category has lasted as long as it has, without even so much as a CfD nomination. Shawn in Montreal (talk) 14:17, 21 October 2011 (UTC)
- Keep and redefine to include teams that have won the Calder Cup, not players on those teams. - The Bushranger One ping only 18:08, 21 October 2011 (UTC)
- Comment But I can see no articles about Calder Cup winning rosters. Have I missed something? Shawn in Montreal (talk) 18:17, 21 October 2011 (UTC)
- I don't mean the rosters, I meant the clubs themselves - this would put Nova Scotia Voyageurs in Category:Calder Cup champions, for instance. Sorry if I was unclear. - The Bushranger One ping only 18:25, 21 October 2011 (UTC)
- But that's not how we use Category:Stanley Cup champions. That is reserved for bio articles on players, which again, fails WP:OC#AWARD at the minor-league level. Even a 20+ Stanley Cup winner like the Montreal Canadiens isn't categorized in the way you propose. One has to go down to Category:Stanley Cup championship seasons to see individual winning seasons for teams, such as 1976–77 Montreal Canadiens season. We should consistently apply the same logic in the AHL. If someone wants to set about creating articles for AHL winning rosters or seasons, then the category could be recreated, under a slightly different name. - The result of the discussion was: rename. Since the creator is asking for the rename, there's no reason to delay it. The final one is clearly in error, so I'm throwing that in too.--Mike Selinker (talk) 07:01, 21 October 2011 (UTC)

- Propose renaming Category:SFA Lumberjacks and Ladyjacks coaches to Category:Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks and Ladyjacks coaches
- Propose renaming Category:Stephen F. Austin State Lumberjacks football coaches to Category:Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks football coaches
- Nominator's rationale: I went ahead and created several categories using the colloquial "SFA Lumberjacks and Ladyjacks" not the Stephen F. Austin State University athletic department's official "Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks and Ladyjacks." Also, an existing category incorrectly adds "State" to a football coach category that does not follow the existing naming standard. NThomas (talk) 06:08, 21 October 2011 (UTC)

- Propose renaming Category:Boxer Rebellion Indemnity Scholarship recipients should be changed to Boxer Indemnity Scholarship recipients
- Nominator's rationale: I corrected the article from Boxer Rebellion Indemnity Scholarship Program to Boxer Indemnity Scholarship Program because the name of the program is Boxer Indemnity Scholarship so the article and the category should be that. ch (talk) 05:50, 21 October 2011 (UTC)

- Propose renaming Category:UAVs and drones by country to Category:Unmanned aerial vehicles by country
- Nominator's rationale: I see no evidence from the article Unmanned aerial vehicle that drones are not unmanned aerial vehicles, so I believe that we can combine the concepts and spell out UAV as per the parent category Category:Unmanned aerial vehicles. There are lots of subcategories that I would suggest be processed automatically if this passes.-- Mike Selinker (talk) 04:11, 21 October 2011 (UTC)

- I think you'll want to take up that suggestion at Talk:Unmanned aerial vehicle, because that's the name used on Wikipedia for these things.--Mike Selinker (talk) 06:57, 21 October 2011 (UTC)
- Not to mention that the industry and press universally uses "Unmanned". (Ghits: Unmanned, 6,200,000; Unpiloted, 20,000.) In addition, the aircraft are piloted - just not by an on-board pilot. The once-suggested alternative, Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle, failed to catch on and was quietly forgotten. Can't imagine why. - The Bushranger One ping only 07:40, 21 October 2011 (UTC)

- Category:Deaths by hang gliding (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
- Nominator's rationale: Quoting from the CfD discussion for Category:Deaths by paragliding, in progress: "A simple list of ordinary people who have died [hang gliding] is not encyclopaedic material and as such there is no such WP page. This category is an attempt to provide such a list, but with no material available for inclusion" The Bushranger One ping only 01:08, 21 October 2011 (UTC)
- In each category only persons that are noteworthy by WP standards are included. The population of hang gliding right at the moment is four noteworthy persons.

Keep, as there is Category:Deaths in sport where the sport of hang gliding is appropriate as a member. Joefaust (talk) 03:09, 23 October 2011 (UTC)- Comment Joe's multiple !votes here are getting pretty pointy, but I see that Hang gliding is a subcat of Category:Unpowered aviation and we do have a category branch for aviation accident victims, so I've added it, as a parent. I'm beginning to think we should keep this. Anyway, I will alert the aviation wikiproject to this discussion. Shawn in Montreal (talk) 04:49, 23 October 2011 (UTC)
- Okay, I'm going to get off the fence -- carefully, given all the people falling from the sky around here -- and say Keep. While the paragliding cat seems to just have the one article and does not meet SMALLCAT at this time, imo, we now have three articles and two redirects in this category, which itself seems to be a bona fide member of both Category:Deaths in sport and Category:Victims of aviation accidents or incidents. Oh, and Joe, you've already made your position clear. Please don't add more "keeps" to this discussion: it's one per customer, okay? Shawn in Montreal (talk) 05:09, 23 October 2011 (UTC)
- If this is kept, it needs to be merged with the "paragliding" one - and renamed. - The Bushranger One ping only 06:15, 23 October 2011 (UTC)
- I was wondering if that were possible. You know, fwiw, Category:Gliding deaths, encompassing all forms including fixed wing, which would be even easier to populate, doesn't seem to exist yet.--Shawn in Montreal (talk) 12:49, 23 October 2011 (UTC)
- I see that User:Ahunt has removed the categories with the edit summary "no cats for redirects." WP:RCAT isn't quite so sweeping, but I certainly can't find an exception in the guideline article that would allow me to reapply the cat, so down the number goes to three bio articles. - Merge into something larger. Some of these were aviators, not sports people - and I doubt if the 2 or 3 from the 1880s thought of themselves as 'hang gliders'. The aviators should go in Category:Victims of aviation accidents or incidents and the sportspeople in Category:Deaths in sport. Occuli (talk) 13:52, 23 October 2011 (UTC)
- Delete this ia an example of an overly limited category. There is no need for categories for every form of death. This reminds me of the ridiculously specialized deaths that appeared in Irregular Webcomic. For what is is worth the category is now down to three entries.John Pack Lambert (talk) 03:35, 4 November 2011 (UTC)

- Propose renaming Category:National Basketball Association films to Category:NBA Entertainment
- Nominator's rationale: Right now, this category includes films where an NBA player has appeared, but that have no formal association with the NBA. There are a couple that do fit the bill, though, so I think we should rename using Category:NFL Films as a model, to encompass the parent article NBA Entertainment and the few film articles that do currently pertain?
